Winner 2009 - Individual Contribution To Maternal & Child Health
To honor an individual who has worked tirelessly and largely behind the scenes to enhance the maternal and child health cause.

Dr. Stephen Hunter

Dr. Stephen Hunter has been an advocate for moms and babies throughout the state of Iowa and through much of his research, this advocacy has extended to all women and infants. Dr. Hunter investigates the use of cell encapsulation and bioartificial organs for the correction of diseases pertinent to mothers and babies, including diabetes in pregnancy and PKU in addition to fetal therapy, vaccine development and preeclampsia.

Dr. Hunter became a March of Dimes State Board member in 2008, State Prematurity Chair and a member of the March of Dimes West Region Program Services Committee in 2009. He is currently working with the Iowa Chapter in planning events to raise awareness and encourage hospitals to follow ACOG guidelines regarding elective cesarean sections and inductions prior to 39 weeks.

Dr. Hunter is an amazing teacher, volunteer, advocate, and physician. His dedication and genuine interest in what is best for his patients is admirable. His passion for health of mothers and babies is reflected in all of the hard work he has done both in and out of the hospital. For that and for what he has been able to do in Iowa, he is worthy of this contribution to Maternal and Child Health award.
