Judith: The short answer given is no. As a result of your inquiry the NPA advocacy committee reviewed the SAMSHA Treatment Protocols and agree that some of these are out of date, and at the 1/18/08 NPA Board meeting, the recommendation was made that NPA contact SAMSHA to discuss and propose a process for reviewing and updating as the committee did note there are significant developments since these protocols were written (1993) including a different view on the hazards of in utero cocaine exposure and the explosion of a new drug addiction (meth). Also as a result of your inquiry, NPA is now considering conducting a survey of neonatology members regarding their familiarity with the protocols and to see if additional guidelines for specific settings might be in order.

Good Morning, I am interested in learning whether the National Perinatal Association has developed treatment guidelines formatted for hospital settings regarding the care and medical management of pregnant substance abusing women and the care of drug exposed infants based on the SAMHSA Treatment Improvement Protocols for both patients, including TIP #2 and TIP #5 developed in the 1990's. Thank you.

This is a user-friendly website, easy to negotiate, with a menu that should be of interest to those involved in perinatal health. The transcultural page has a resource to whom the reader who has interest or questions is directed. I suggest this line be either bold or italicized to capture attention. aThe advocacy, FAN and state forum pages should have similar resourde directives to encourage connection and dialogue.
